2008 ProgrammeSome displays arranged for the 2008 - 2009 seasonOlympic Games 1936The 1936 Berlin Olympic Games had been handed to Berlin before the Nazis came to power. The athlete who carried the torch to light the flame fought in North Africa and ended the war in a British POW camp. German East Africa 1914-1917A German colony, included what is now Burundi, Rwanda and Tanganyika. It measured 384,170 square miles in size, or nearly three times the size of re-united Germany today. It came into existence during the 1880s and ended during World War I. Zanzibar German Post Offices & LamuLamu, Kenya's oldest living town, an original Swahili settlements along coastal East Africa. The port of Lamu has existed for at least a thousand years. Portugal, with a monopoly in shipping along the East African coast, took control in 1506 until 1652. Lamu's economy was based on slave trade until abolition in 1907. Austria German OccupationUnion between Germany and Austria was forbidden under the terms of the Versailles Treaty. The KlienwalsertalA valley in the Austrian province of Vorarlberg. Due to its geographical position and the mountain structure, there is no direct road link with the rest of the Vorarlberg or Austria. Access to the valley by car is only from Germany. Zeppelin mail In 1874 Heinrich von Stephan, one of the founders of the UPU argued that mail should take advantage of new technologies. reminding his audience that under the Prussian siege in 1870, Paris had dispatched over 60 balloons carrying mail and passengers. When mail was carried by Zeppelin airships much later, Postmaster von Stephan's dream of airmail became a reality. Meetings are fortnightly at the Powick Village Hall.
