The Midland (GB) Postal History SocietyThe Society was formed in 1975 to promote interest in British Postal History, particularly (but not exclusively) from the midland counties including Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. Another of the objectives of the Society is to record all the knowledge gained and to publish it for the benefit of members. Midland Mail the Society's journal is published five times a year and contains articles on a wide range of aspects of British Postal History as well as reports of meetings. The Society has published books including Local Posts of the Midland Counties, which won the prestigious Rowland Hill Award for research in 1996, and The Undated Circular Marks of the Midland Counties. The Society is currently researching the Mail Coach routes and mileage marks of the Midland Counties and is hoping to publish the result in 2004. The Society meets monthly on Saturdays between September and May. Half of the meetings are in or around Birmingham, but other venues include Worcester, Warwick and Burton-on-Trent. Traditionally the Burton Meeting is an all-day event held in December with a speaker and full Christmas lunch. Joint meetings with other postal history groups usually take place in September each year. A popular auction is held in April after the AGM and the Society has an excellent library available to Members. For details of membership contact The Secretary - matthews20@blueyonder.co.uk |
